Manuel the young naval lieutenant seconded to the ship, is aghast and joins the rebel party in the village headed by Tom and his son Harry, Jane's brother and Angela's fiancé. The rebels are betrayed by Sir Basil and Tom is hanged. Jane is rescued. The protesting Sir Basil is despatched by Robeles when he learns his daughter is among the hostages. Harry mines the ship and he helps them all to escape. Manuel engages Robeles in mortal combat and the ship and its crew are blown to pieces. The following two statements regarding the story appear during the opening credit sequence, one before the main credits, and one after: Before: 'July 1588. In the English Channel the British Fleet has been battling for two days against the mighty Spanish Armada....' After: 'Badly damaged, with half their crews killed, the ships of Spain battle their way on up the Channel.
